ameliaThe annual Amelia Earhart Festival in Atchison will be moved to Warnock Lake because of flooding, city officials have announced. the July 15-16 festival is usually held in Riverfront Park, but the park is closed because of high water. Independence Park, Veterans Memorial Park and all riverfront restaurants remain open. The city is continuing to experience heavy traffic on Riverview Road as people come to see the water level, and further traffic restrictions may become necessary. Across the area, water levels are expected to hold steady over the next few days, officials with the Kansas City District of the U.S.



Army Corps of Engineers said Monday. Thunderstorms capable of producing 1 to 2 inches of rain are projected to roll across South Dakota today and work their way to Nebraska later this week. According to the Missouri River Joint Information Center, all non-federal levees in the corps’ Kansas City District upstream of Kansas City are either overtopping or have been breached. A recent report from the center said nearly all crossings across the Missouri River are closed in northwestern Missouri. Officials say the best detour across the river is U.S. 36 at St. Joseph or bridges in the Kansas City area. Buchanan County, Mo. Sand boils at two non-federal levees were sandbagged, and water was being pumped. the county brought in four more pumps at Lake Contrary. the Corps of Engineers already has completed several relief wells at the lake.
