At least two people on Saturday were injured in clashes as a complete shutdown was observed across the Valley in response to the call given by Hurriyat Conference (G) against the alleged abduction and gang-rape of Kulgam woman and the arrest of executive director of Kashmir American Council (KAC) Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai by FBI sleuths in the United States. In Srinagar, eyewitnesses said scores of people mainly youth took to streets at Nawab Bazar, Kawdara, Hawal and other parts of the Old City and staged pro-freedom demonstrations. Shouting slogans, the people were protesting against the arrest of Fai and the alleged abduction and gang-rape of a woman by uniformed men in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district.
Protesters hurled stones on the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers and the police. The forces returned the stones, triggering off clashes. At least two people, eyewitnesses said, suffered minor injuries in the clashes. At Barzulla, a teenager, whose identity could not be ascertained, was arrested when a group of protesters hurled stones on the CRPF men and police. Reports of clashes have also been received from HMT area of the city outskirts. Meanwhile, a complete shutdown was observed in Srinagar, and other major towns of the districts in response to the cal given by pro-freedom Hurriyat Conference (G).
