power ball

power ball Wednesday's Powerball numbers finally made someone $200 million richer. It had been several weeks since any player won the lottery game, as the winning numbers proved to be very elusive. But that isn't an entirely new thing, since there had been three $100+ million jackpots in 2011 alone, and one that was worth over $200 million. In this case, the jackpot hit exactly $200 million because no one had won since April 23. But that drought finally ended Wednesday, when a winning ticket was sold in New York, according to the Associated Press.

The lucky numbers were 8, 18, 38, 46 and 56, with the Powerball at 31. For weeks, no one had gotten all six digits in a drawing, or had only gotten five out of six. But whoever bought the matching ticket in New York has broken that streak, and now only needs to come forward to claim the prize.

Because it had been so long since someone won, the latest winner will claim the second largest jackpot of the year. But it still won't top the $221.7 million grand prize won April 6 by Michael Reardon and Darin Fox from Indiana. Yet it is the second major jackpot won by someone in New York, after Stephen Kirwin took home a $122.1 million annuity Jan. 22.

Last year, these kind of big winnings were rare for the game, as only six $100+ million grand prizes were claimed. However, that included three $200+ million prizes between March and June. Already there have been two such jackpots this year, and four that have gone over $100 million.

Even with Powerball back down to a $20 million starting point, its grand prize is still worth more than rival Mega Millions for the moment. That game has a mere $15 million at stake for its next drawing June 3. In addition, it hasn't had a massive grand prize since late March, although at that time $319 million was on the line.
